Mint Chutney

This spicy taste dip goes very well with indian tiffins, dosa or idli. Mint as you all know is a very healthy ingredient and has many health benefits. It is highly recommended to use mint on a regular basis in our diet.

Let’s look at few of the benefits of Mint Leaves (thanks Medindia Blogs) before getting to the recipe of Mint Chutney/Dip

  • Inhaling fresh mint leaves relieves you from congestion problems, like sinus infections and common cold.
  • Your teeth becomes white when you chew fresh mint leaves for a while at least once or twice a week.
  • Mint leaves eliminate toxins from the body and when included in the diet on a regular basis, eliminates bacteria and fungus from the body.
  • Drinking herbal mint tea reduces irritated bowel syndromes and cleanses the stomach.
  • The antifungal properties associated with mint help in curing asthma and other allergic conditions.
  • Mint helps in getting rid of headaches and migraines.
  • Mint also acts as an antioxidant, a prevention for cancer.



  • Mint Leaves – 1 bunch
  • Onion – 1
  • Tomato – 2
  • Black Pepper – 3 to 4
  • Red Chilli – 2
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste

1. Wash and chop the mint leaves into small pieces.
2. Add all the ingredients and grind them smoothly.
3. Pour oil in a pan and lightly fry the chutney.
4. Serve with idli or dosa.


Puttu – A Keralite’s Ecstatic Breakfast

Puttu  is a South Indian and Sri Lankan breakfast dish of steamed cylinders (or coconut shells) of ground rice layered with coconut. It is popular in the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well as in areas of Sri Lanka, where it is also known as pittu. Puttu is served with side dishes such as chickpea curry or banana. Apart from this, our traditional way of serving puttu includes steamed green gram and fried papads.

You could use either the readymade puttu powder (available in all supermarkets) or you can make the powder at home as below.


* 2 cups of raw rice
* 1 cup of grated coconut
* salt to taste


Soak the rice for 2- 3 hours and drain the water. Spread the rice in a paper and allow it to dry for 3-4 minutes see that it is a little wet and not fully dry. Grind the dried raw rice to a fine powder in a mixie.

Fry the rice flour in a pan, stir it continuously until you get the aroma of the rice, remove the flour, bring down to cool. Mix salt in water and sprinke water little by little to the rice flour and mix it throughly. The rice flour should be wet enough, keep stirring it with your fingers as it should remain in a powdered form and do not mould it in to a dough.

If you are using a puttu maker, then add 1 ½ cup of water in the puttu pot and bring it to boil. Now take the cylindrical vessel and add a handful of coconut, then 3- 4 handfuls of rice flour, repeat it until you fill the puttu vessel. Now fit the cylilndrical vessel on the pot. Steam cook it for 4-5 minutes.

Remove the cylinder, use a spatula to push out the puttu to a plate. Serve as desired

Note:I have used a coconut shell type puttu maker and i steamed it on top of a pressure cooker without putting on the whistle for 10 mts.



A healthy breakfast for many but for me it’s dinner ;-)

Yes…. I am talking about the high fibre healthy Weetabix..It’s a complete pack of all nutritions. Whenever i prefer a light dinner, my choice is this. It’s soothing for the stomach.

Hummus – A healthy dip

Hummus is a Levantine Arab food dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is popular throughout the Middle East and in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe.

Served with fresh or toasted pita bread, hummus makes for a great snack or appetizer. Tahini is an important part of the hummus recipe and cannot be substituted. A very healthy dip indeed.


  • 1 16 oz can of chickpeas or steamed chickpease
  • 4 cup liquid from can of chickpeas or steamed chickpease
  • 3-5 tablespoons lemon juice (depending on taste)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons tahini
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil


  • Drain chickpeas and set aside liquid. Combine remaining ingredients in blender or food processor. Add 1/4 cup of liquid from chickpeas. Blend for 3-5 minutes on low until thoroughly mixed and smooth.
  • Place in serving bowl, and create a shallow well in the center of the hummus.
  • Add a small amount (1-2 tablespoons) of olive oil in the well. Garnish with parsley (optional).
  • Serve with fresh, warm or toasted pita bread, or cover and refrigerate.

Food (Tip) of the Week – 1 – Gorgeous Oranges

We all know that this super color gorgeous oranges are rich in Vitamin C and is the most favorite fruit of many. Let us explore lil more about this juicy tasty fruit.

Nutritional Benefits
Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids. One orange (130 grams) supplies nearly 100 percent of the recommended daily dietary intake of vitamin C.

When you eat a whole orange, it provides good dietary fiber. Leave in the albedo (the white matter under the peel) as much as possible as the albedo contains the highest amount of valuable bioflavonoids and other anti-cancer agents.

In addition, oranges are a good source of vitamin A, the B vitamins, amino acids, beta-carotene, pectin, potassium, folic acid, calcium, iodine, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, manganese, chlorine and iron.

The combination of the high amount of anti-oxidant (vitamin C) and flavonoids in oranges makes it one of the best fruits in helping to promote optimal health.

Heart disease: A high intake of flavonoids and vitamin C has been known to halve the risk of heart diseases.

High blood pressure: Studies have shown that a flavonoid called hesperidin in oranges can lower high blood pressure.

Immune system: The strong content of vitamin C stimulates white cells to fight infection, naturally building a good immune system.

Kidney stones, prevent: Drinking orange juice daily can significantly drop the risk of formation of calcium oxalate stones in the kidney.

Oranges do have the capability of closing the pores. All you have to do is to squeeze the juice from one orange and apply it on the face like a face wash. Rinse it immediately. The orange juice shrinks the enlarged pores. The process that you have to follow for cleaning your enlarged pores is very simple. Just dip a cotton ball in orange juice and apply. After keeping it for 2 to 3 minutes you can just clean it. The vitamin C in the orange juice will add smoothness and glossiness to your skin.

This is something that you can try ever day other then chemical bleaches which are advised to use once in a month or so.

Orange has superb anti aging qualities. The age reversing antioxidants present in it helps to prevent wrinkles. The vitamin c in oranges increases the production of collagens which keeps skin stiff and moist. So, if you are spending on anti aging creams which are not only expensive but also harmful, then you can try eating oranges daily. That would definitely be a better option.

  • Hold an orange to determine if it is heavy; the heavier the orange, the juicier it is.
  • Try to find firm, smooth rinds. Thin peels would mean there is more fruit within.
  • Avoid orange that is coarse, mushy or seems to have soft spots.
  • Smell the orange. It must possess a sweet, faint fragrance at normal temperature.

How to Store Oranges

  • Oranges can be stored at normal temperature as well as in the fridge. They usually last near to a fortnight, and can retain almost the same amount of the vitamin in them.
  • If you would like to have your oranges cold, keep them in the fridge without wrapping.
  • Avoid storing the fruit in plastic bags without perforation because moisture caught inside could promote mold growth.
